Emotional Intelligence: The Skill That Separates Good from Great

Ask any top executive what they value most in a candidate, and you might expect to hear things like experience, technical ability, or education.

But the real answer? Emotional intelligence.

Despite being labeled a “soft skill,” emotional intelligence (EQ) is what sets high performers apart. It influences how you communicate, lead, and connect with others—yet, it’s often overlooked in professional development.

At Rise Up For You, my team and I work with individuals and businesses worldwide to strengthen what we call humanskills—emotional intelligence, leadership, and communication. These are the skills that make all the difference, yet they aren’t something you just “pick up”—they require intentional effort to develop.

One of the most crucial, yet underestimated, aspects of EQ? Social awareness.

The Power of Social Awareness

Social awareness is more than just understanding others—it’s about how you navigate interactions, adapt to situations, and build meaningful connections.

Emotional intelligence is made up of four key pillars, with 18 competencies under them. Within social awareness—the third pillar—three stand out as game changers:

  1. Empathy: The ability to genuinely understand and connect with others. This isn’t just about hearing words—it’s about actively listening, setting aside personal bias, and being fully present in the moment. Strong leaders don’t just speak well; they listen well.

  2. Cultural & Organizational Awareness: Have you ever walked into a meeting and instantly sensed the tone of the room? Socially aware individuals can quickly read the energy, identify key players, and adjust their approach accordingly. Whether you’re speaking to executives, clients, or colleagues, knowing your audience is essential.

  3. Providing Value & Service: The best professionals don’t just focus on what they can gain—they focus on what they can give. They understand that success isn’t about proving themselves but about contributing in a way that benefits the team, the organization, and the bigger picture.

Why Social Awareness is a Game Changer

Strong technical skills might land you a job, but emotional intelligence determines how far you’ll go. The ability to navigate social dynamics, connect with people, and lead with confidence is what separates good professionals from truly exceptional ones.

And just like confidence, emotional intelligence isn’t something you wait to have—it’s something you build.

If EQ isn’t already part of your personal growth plan, now is the time to change that. Because success isn’t just about what you know—it’s about how well you understand and work with people.
